Dear all,
What is the meaing of "his temperament was pushed beyond its limits"
"Maradona was regarded as the world's best player, and the greatest since Pele. However, this stigma attracted heavy treatment from defenders and the famous playmaker's temperament was pushed beyond its limits"
Does it mean "he bacame so pressured"???
Thanks.
I'm not sure what the stigma is here.
But, Maradona is known for having volatile/unstable temperament. I guess, if such temperament is pushed "beyond its limit", it becomes impossible to control.
a limit is something that contains and sets borders
to push beyond (its) limits = is to go beyond the accepted/set boundaries
I agree - 'stigma' is usually pejorative, except in the special case of 'stigmata' (which I imagine few people would recognize as the plural of 'stigma' at all). Here, it seems to be used to mean just 'sign'/'label'.
Maradona's temperament had limits. When defenders' attention pushed him beyond those limits, he tended to 'fly off the handle'.
