I think it should be C.

Moreover, only several representative handfuls are eligible for texture. In other words, the phrase"several representative handfuls" refers to the requirements for an adequate soil sample.

A handful (of soil, in this case), is the amount of soil you can hold in one hand. The paragraph says that more than one (representative, i.e. useful because it is taken from an average, not particular point/area) handful of soil is needed to obtain a valid sample of soil for analysis.

Handfuls just refers to the size of the sample, not to the number of samples. Think about the word several as referring to the number.
