How to use hoping for something in the past!?

Hi guys,

I'm a little bit confused! Is it right to say "I was hoping to see you once more before your departure" or " I was hoping to see you once more before you left" to a person who left somewhere for like a week ago?
I mean he is already gone, and I want to express that I wanted to see him before his departure.

I would say "I had been hoping..."
