Is make up one's mind = decide= determine? Is it correct or are they slightly different?

ex)He made up his mind to study hard = He decided to study hard = He determined to study hard.

ex)He made up his mind to study hard = He decided to study hard = He was determined to study hard.

You can't use determine in this way.

He was determined to study hard.

But there was (current until about the mid-20th cent., and still used by a few old fogeys) a usage quite like this. 'After the Grand Tour, he determined on a career in the Church.' Most people today would use something like 'decided on' or even 'set his heart on'.
