Default I don't get "give" usage...

I don't know how to interpret this following sentence:

Most of all, students are stressed a lot if they only focus on grades. Some students may be motivated to study due to scores. However, it only gives stress to get obsessed with grades.

For a long time, I have just known the usage of "give" like this:

    S gives someone something
    or
    S gives something to someone

However, I don't know how to understand this "it gives stress to get obsessed with grades".

I'd be glad if you could help me :)

In my opinion, that's poor use of the word "gives". I would have said "However, being obsessed with grades only causes stress".

We use "give" in other situations than the example you provided, but not in the way it's used in that quote.

The example I quoted is one of my English teachers' writing expressions.
That made me confused a lot but now I got better expression thanks to you.

I think this site is very educational for me.

    Again, thank you so much
