In the US, that "V" hand signal has always been known as the "peace sign." It doesn't have the negative connotations it seems to have in the UK.

(Sadly, during the height of the Yuppie era, many youngsters thought the written peace symbol ☮ stood for Mercedes-Benz, not worldwide harmony.)
