Hello everyone

I was wondering about the difference between "make a movie" and "do a movie".

I have the impression that a director makes movies and an actor does movies.

Am I right? Can you give me your opinions even if you're not sure? Can I have examples as well?

I would stay away from using "do" in this sense. I do work, I do jump in the lake but I don't "do" movies - unless I am 13 years old and do not understand the language.

You could say that the actor stars in a movie, or appears in it if it is not a leading role.

Also, an actor can do a cameo or make a cameo appearance. This is said of a very famous actor making a very short appearance in a film. For example, Emma Thompson's four or five seconds in the last H. Potter movie. Or Alfred Hitchock's famous cameos in all his films.

'Do a movie' is also a common phrase for making a night out of a movie, i.e. going to one: "Friday, want to do a movie?"
