    Default in that vs because

    Hi,

    Question1:
any difference between in that and because in my sentence?
    Question2:
can I always replace because by in that?

    Setence:
Rise in interest rate can cause Japan's economy to slowdown, in that/because it makes borrowing and investment more expensive and discourages people to "borrow and buy".

    thanks

There are other problems with your sentence.

Did you read this: http://www.usingenglish.com/forum/as...tml#post782401 ? - I'm thinking particularly of
'Inasmuch as' is closer in meaning to 'to the extent that' or 'in that' than it is to 'because'. 'We are colleagues, inasmuch as we work for the same company. But that company has more than 100,000 employees; we don't even work in the same continent.'
The example might have been 'We are colleagues, in that we work for the same company. But that company has more than 100,000 employees; we don't even work in the same continent.' 'In that' doesn't mean 'because', though it is related in a way suggested by this example:
'Because we work for the same company, we could be said to be colleagues'.
