Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?
The kid was having the time of his life. (O. Henry, “The Ransom of Red Chief”)
was having the time of his life = was having the greatest fun he had ever had

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
