Apparently Fred took offence at what I said, because he suddenly turned on his heels and left the room.

The inspector listened to the discussion so long as questions on principle were discussed, but he turned on his heels and left when personal accusations were exchanged.

turn on one’s heels = turn about in displeasure before leaving, making a sharp about-face before leaving, usually expressing indignation
