    Default opposite of 'fall asleep'

    How should someone state that his/her being late was because he/she got up late unintentionally? The word or the phrase would be the opposite of 'fall asleep'?

    I overslept.

    (For example: My alarm was set for 6, but I never heard it. I woke up at 8.)
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
