I understand in the US 'hit on' does this job - I've never met it in Br Eng though.

They're not exactly the same but...

- To flirt with someone
- To sweettalk someone
- To romance someone

Of course, you could type "synonyms for to chat up" into Google and get lots of answers.

Edit: I just saw the previous answer. I've been hearing "to hit on" more and more in BrE recently.
