I want to know, what is difference between object and complement ?


Look at these senentces underline words are copmlement or object.

1. Jhon looks funny.

2. The food smells good.

The food smells good: "good" is a subject complement here, and it's an adjective.

He became a physicist: "physicist" is a subject complement, and it's a noun.


An example of an object would be:

He scored a goal (scored what? - a goal): a direct object.

I gave him a tip: "him" (to whom?) is an indirect object. "a tip" (what?) is a direct object.

Nasirkhalid, notice how Bennevis spells the word "complement". "Compliment" means something completely different. (Don't forget to look it up!)

I want to share with you the important thing about complement, if you read any sentence and find it difficult to find whether it is complement or object. Just try this example
This dress looks expensive.
Change the underline verb with verb Be (is, are, am)
This dress is expensive.
If this sentence still gives you meaning it is a complement, if not, it is an object.
Let's try this:
Sheep give wool
Change the underline verb with verb Be (is) and read the sentence
Sheep is wool
This sentence is not meaningful; therefore wool is an object,not complement.
Another example:
The food smells good.
Change the underline verb with verb Be (is) and read the sentence:
The food is good.
It still gives you meaning, so it is complement.
