Principal Lecturer is a higher grade than Senior Lecturer.

    Not a teacher.

If you can’t remember the difference, use a mnemonic hook:
Principal is always Number One, i.e. the most important person in an organisation. Think of a prince.
Senior just means older in a sense of long service/more experience, as opposed to someone junior, i.e. someone who has only been in a job or position for a short time.
There can be many Senior Lecturers, but there is only one Principal Lecturer.

Nice idea, but 'Principal Lecturer' is actually a grade, and there can be more than one in an establishment.

If this is so, which I am not questioning, this is not a very aptly chosen grade. Contradictio in adjecto (lat. principalis = first in importance).
But then titles often have little to do with logic but much with egos and managing people's vanity in any given organisation.
So who would be boss? Head Lecturer?

The big boss is the professor/head of department. Apt or not, higher education establishments make their own decisions in the UK. You can get some idea here: Lecturer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
