Default i was visiting my friend

If we say "When I was a child, I was visiting my friend a lot" is it correct or should say only "used to visit'?
    Thank you

When I was a child, I used to visit my friend a lot.
When I was a child, I visited my friend a lot.

Both of these are fine, though you don't really need "I used to" when you've already explained that you are talking about the past by saying "When I was a child..."

The same rule is applied on the sentence" When I was 17 ,I studied to go to university'' or there I can also use the continuous form "was studying".

    Thanks again

Your sentence may suggest that the speaker began to study at the age of 17. 'Was studying' suggests that on their 17th birthday, or throughout their eighteenth year, they were engaged in study.

Please note that the space goes after a punctuation mark, not before it.
