When I was a child, I used to visit my friend a lot.
When I was a child, I visited my friend a lot.

Both of these are fine, though you don't really need "I used to" when you've already explained that you are talking about the past by saying "When I was a child..."

The same rule is applied on the sentence" When I was 17 ,I studied to go to university'' or there I can also use the continuous form "was studying".
