    Default criteria vs criterion

I hear many people talking about criteria in singular form. For example, he didn't meet the first criteria . Shouldn't we always use "criterion" instead of criteria in singular form?

'Criteria' seems to be going the way of 'data' and 'media' and becoming singular whether we like it or not.

As 5jj says, things are changing, but if you use criterion/criteria, the traditionalists will be delighted to hear a non-native speaker doing something they see native speakers getting wrong.
