I think that if I stand out it means that I may be good at something and for this reason I every time distinguish myself...If I stick out it should mean that I may do something wrong and people can notice what I'm doing because I'm doing it in public...What's your opinion on that? My initial thought was that there is no difference between the two but as I thought more, I believe that there is a difference - at least as used in the US. A person can "stand out" as the worse type of criminal or this person can "stick out" as a major criminal. There seems to be a subtle difference in meaning. Usually someone who "stands out" is seen in a more positive light than someone who "sticks out"
Can these two verbs be used for objects too? For example, for a building? Yes. The Chrysler Building stands out as being a fine representative of a certain style while a building in Harlem may stick out as being outdated.
What's the difference between a building that stands out and one that sticks out?
By the way, is it set apart a synonym of to stand out or to stick out? When should it be used? This is a different question and should be asked in a separate thread.
