Safe bet

Safe bet means" something that is likely to happen, or someone or something that is likely to be successful"

Can we write the following sentence? is it appropriate?

1) Real estate is a safe bet for a lot of money

(meaning intended is that the real estate is not making much money now but in future there is possibility for making lot of money).

2) I am a safe bet for what reads well in English.


I got this sentence from one of the members in this forum.


Is he trying to say that he will be good in English in future but now he is not that good?


But why did he use the word"what"(instead of who)?

The meaning is that you can have complete confidence in it. It is NOT the case that it's not good now, but will improve at a later time. It is good now.

A: Where should we go for dinner?
B: Cheslea's is always a safe bet. = We always have a good meal at Chelsea's.

A: What should we get Mom for her birthday?
B: You know she loves Tresor. A bottle of her favorite perfume is always a safe bet. = You know she will like a bottle of her favorite perfume.

Do you certainly do not have to call me "mam" but I certainly would prefer you not call me "sir" or "he."

"What" is being used as a pronoun. It stands for "words, phrases, expressions, and other examples of writing."

It could also have been "that which reads well in English" but that would sound more formal than I wanted it to.

I don't know why you think it means things will change in the future. The expession "a safe bet" refers to the current situation being good. It doesn't have anything to do with getting better in the future.

It means you can trust me if I tell you something sounds good and natural in my dialect of English.
