Default to provide the sentence meaning

Writers have attempted to provide the sentence meaning through context, the first of which was written by Chinese linguist Yuen Ren Chao.
(Colorless green ideas sleep furiously; Wikipedia)

I think that it should be "...to provide the sentence with meaning...".
Am I right and if I am is it a common mistake that native speakers make?

    Thanks.

An attempt was also made by a UE poet here: Well-Formed

If the writer meant 'the meaning of the sentence' by 'the sentence meaning', then it's fine.
