Hello,
What`s the meaning of the word "zoon"?
I`ve found these definitions:
- (n.) Any one of the perfectly developed individuals of a compound animal.
- (n.) An animal which is the sole product of a single egg; -- opposed to zooid.
But still I don`t understand the meaning
I've never seen this word before. Can you explain the context in which you saw it?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
I think the first definition here is more helpful: zoon - definition of zoon by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.
If I'm reading it correctly then a human being is an example of a zoon, as we are the result of a fertilised egg.
Barb is not alone. I had never met the word before. Unless you are a biologist, you really don't have to worry about this word.
In a biology class back in the ice-age, I had to learn this term. I had not seen it again until today. The best and most simple definition I found comes from the online medical dictionary: (zoon - definition of zoon by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.)
1. An animal developed from a fertilized egg.
We are all zoons or zoa (either may be considered the plural of zoon).
