Singular verb for the plural subject Bel and the Dragon consists of two stories which were added to the Greek translation of the book of Daniel. I have read this sentence in the Bible. Why "consists" has been used instead of "consist"? Here subject is plural.

The characters of Bel and of the Dragon do not consist of two stories; it is their tale that consists of two stories.Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
