" a bright star " would also work. The concept of following a bright star is one that man (of many different faiths and cultures) associates with following something or someone good.

I like 'a shining example'.

People also use the term 'role model' - especially in the context of personal development.

Example: 'There should be more male teachers in primary schools. Growing boys need a male role model.'
