Default Put their lives on hold

I understand the meaning of the expression in bold, but have difficulty to translate it to my language. Could you, please, rephrase it for me?

"Many of Gaza's 1.4 million people have been forced to put their lives on hold during the three years the territory's borders were sealed by Israel and Egypt".

Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.

Perhaps even worse than that - like being compelled to live under restrictions on everyday life such as traveling abroad for learning, meeting family members, medical treatment etc.

    NOT A TEACHER

    Maybe something like:

During the last three years, the territory's sealed borders have forced its 1.4 million

inhabitants to endure lives of almost suspended animation.
