Question about exercise directions
Hi Teachers,
My question is about the directions given according to the exercise. The directions will be fine if there were only wh-questions, but the thing is that there are also answers. So the students are instructed to provide answers that fit the questions and to provide questions that fit the answers or fit the bold words in the answers. How can I rephrase the directions in blue in order to make them absolutely clear and true please? Because I don’t think that the given ones are appropriate. And to say ‘Ask or answer these wh-questions based on Episode 5 on page 19’ doesn’t look fine to me either.
Thanks in advance
Answer these wh-questions based on Episode 5 on page 19.
1.- How long did Coke listen for?
__________________________________________________ _________
2.- What did Coke ask himself after that? (three questions)
__________________________________________________ _________
__________________________________________________ _________
3.-What was open to his surprise?
__________________________________________________ _________
4.- __________________________________________________ _________
There were some photographs on the shelf above the fire.
5.- What condition were the photos in?
__________________________________________________ _________
6.- What did Coke do when he felt that someone else was in the room?
__________________________________________________ _________
__________________________________________________ _________
7.- __________________________________________________ _________
There was a small knife in Coke’s pocket.

Re: Question about exercise directions
Why not break the exercise into two?
1. Answer the following questions (about Episode 5 on page 19).
2. Here are the answers to some questions. Write the questions.

Re: Question about exercise directions
Hi 5jj,
Thank you for your reply. It is a good suggestion, but the thing is that the questions are written in chronological order according to the Episode. So number 1, 2, 3, and 4 can be questions, number 5 and 6 can be answers, and so on.
How could I put your suggestion together please?

There are a couple of other problems.

The answer to this question is three questions. Do you want the students to quote the questions, or to report them?
3.-What was open to his surprise?
This seems a strange question to me.
