There's no correct answer. This is simply a situation in which the woman is finding the man uncommunicative. She will probably not care as much about his grammar than about whether he shares his thoughts and feelings with her.
However, in the very unlikely event that she's also a grammar teacher, she has no grounds for complaint from either answer. He is either giving his thoughts at the time the question was asked, or at the time after which the question was processed. However, if he says, "I'm wondering why you asked me what I was thinking", that's not playing the game by the rules.
