Note that 'fare' is particularly appropriate in the contrast with McDonald. "Fare' usually collocates with 'peasant/honest/unassuming/uncomplicated/simple/homely...' - words like that.

I did a search on BNC. Apart from cases where 'fare' obviously means 'payment for travel'. and one 'usually fare'* in which 'fare' means 'do' or 'get on' (compare 'wayfarer', 'seafarer'. 'farewell', German fahren, and so on), the first 50 (all the hits numbering more than one) will give you an idea of suitable collocations.
