Because it's redundant. You are already saying that "it" is worth reading. The pronoun "it" stands in for "the book." Would you say "The book is worth reading the book"?

In my opinion, we can say "It's worth reading it". All of the sentences below are possible:

That book is worth reading.
It (the book) is worth reading.
It (preparatory) is worth reading that book.
It (preparatory) is worth reading it (the book).
