"The audience was surprised with the student's ---------- speech.
1)diligent 2)menacing 3)inquisitive 4)spontaneous"
I chose 1, answer sheet gives 4.Which is correct and why?
The clue's in the word surprised, though it's not a particularly good question IMO.
Not a good quesiton at all. I expect if he were menacing, that would have been a bit of a surprise as well!
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Why would you be surprised that someone's speech was "detailed and careful"? Unless the student was known to be sloppy and unprepared.
This is a poor question.
While I think it's a poor question, I think diligent speech is the least likely answer.
Yes. It's a poor question. But spontaneity would be the most surprising, if forced to choose an answer. The others deal with the content of the speech. This is with the very fact that the student spoke at all.
