Shaker sweater

Hi

Does anyone know what Shaker sweater is?

"She is wearing a bright blue Shaker sweater and acid-washed jeans."

Here, "Shaker" means a kind of knitting? or a name of a manufacturer?

According my googling, it seems like a kind of knitting, but I just couldn't figure out the feature of the knitting and why it's called Shaker.

Could anyone help me out?

Could it have anything to do with the Shakers? They're known for their knitting as well as their furniture according to this:

As Tdol has suggested, I am quite certain it refers to the religious group known as the Shakers. I would reference the wikipedia link in Tdol's comment.

I don't know for sure, but looking at your quote in post 3, as well as 2 others from the link Shakers in the US down to just three, I would infer that they did. One community "earned a huge reputation for its knitted turtleneck pullovers" and Shakers are known for their "unique architecture, furniture and handicraft style."

I think it's a question not so much of invention, more of fashion - if Shakers could be accused of such a thing. It was a style they used a lot. There is a Shaker style of furniture too. (Of course, necessity being 'the mother of invention', often fashion follows an invention that originally solved some local problem.)
