Question about have been + adj

Is this right to say " I have been ambitious to do sth."?

Or should I add something like"... for XXX years"

And , what's the difference between "I am ambitious to do" and "I have been ambitious to do"

This question has tortured me for the whole day ... I'm going crazy!!

Is this right to say " I have been ambitious to do sth."?

Or should I add something like"... for XXX years". "Have been" suggests that your ambition began sometime in the past, but to be more specific you could identify a period of time preceded by "for" or "since" etc.
And , what's the difference between "I am ambitious to do" (right now) and "I have been ambitious to do" (from sometime in the past).

This question has tortured me for the whole day ... I'm going crazy!! Calm down now. Take a deep breath and count to ten.

Unfortunately this is the first sentence of my Personal Statement for a university, and I've sent it to the Admission Committee... without awareness of this fault 5555……how poor my grammar is...
At least I learn something from that, anyway
