Is this " never to use violence in his fights, even if others used violence against him" conditional1, a real possibility or conditional 2, an unreal possiblity? I learned that for reported speech of the past, it's hard to tell if it's a real or unreal one, but they were like "He said if she came he would also come" and it was a subordinate clause.

But this is not a subordinate clause, but an independent clause of a motto, so it's more confusing, So for this kind of clause, how can we tell if it's real or unreal conditional? I know context is the key, but just want to know how to deal with this kind of special clause.

ex)Mahatma Gandhi was a true hero. He had a very important rule for himself: never to use violence in his fights, even if others used violence against him. He continued to fight for the rights of Indians peacefully. And he never used violence all his life.
