Hello everybody.
I was asked a question from one of my students yesturday while dealing with "so do I / neither do I" to express agreement and disagreement.
the question was: ( If someone said: I dislike insects. Am I going to say: So do I. or Neither do I. )
Well, personally I'm confused. Can anyone help?
Thank you
I dislike insects.
So do I.
I don't like insects.
Neither do I.
We use "so" with positive statements and "neither" with negative. Don't be confused by the fact that "dislike" has a negative connotation. That makes no difference. There is no actual word in "I dislike insects" that makes it a negative statement, whereas "I don't like ..." uses "don't" which is a negative.
