    [not a teacher]

Some context might help to clarify your question, but in general, a tip may be given without any solicitation, whereas a hint may be given if there is a known problem/question.

    Examples:

Say buddy, I noticed you keep spelling that word wrong. Here's a tip, try a dictionary!

1: Boy, I sure wish I could spell this word correctly.
    2: Here's a hint, it's in the dictionary.

Tom: I keep forgetting. What's the capital of the United States?

Mona: Here's a hint: Who was the first American president?

Tom: Oh, thanks. George Washington was. Now I remember: Washington, D.C.

    *****

Martha: I'm going to visit country X.

George: Oh, yeah? I was there last year.

    Martha: Did you like it?

George: Yeah, but here's a tip: use public transportation whenever you can.

    Martha: Why?

George: Because many of the taxi drivers are dishonest.
