I know that "sett off" alone means "to leave a place to for somewhere else" but I can't get "set off on" in particular, and also the whole expression "set off on what`s left of the season"
You 'set off' 'on a journey'. They are leaving for the next event in the kayaking season. There is little of the season left, i.e. most of the events have already been held.
Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
