Default a holiday/a day off on July 4th?

If you want to ask your boss if it's possible not to go to work on a specific day, then how to ask this : "Can I have a holiday/ a day off/ a free day on July 4?"

Do you wish to take one day of your holiday allowance on a specific day?

Context is important. Please provide enough for us to be able to deal effectively with your question.
Your thread title should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.

No, the holiday allowance does not play a role. I just don't want to work on that day but want to ask this politely. By the way, this could be any day of the year.

It's a good idea to include the word please in any polite request, to give your boss a reason why you want the day off, and to say you'll take it without pay.

I'd ask for a day off rather than a holiday.
