Relative pronouns

hi everyone,
I know that the generale rule is that :
for people we use: WHO, WHOM, WHOSE
for things or animals we use: What, Which, Where, That
However, I still have difficulties with the following four sentences.
Put relative pronouns in the following:


1. He's a boy........... I know you can trust. (here I should put WHO)

2. She's the girl ..............we thought had been ill. (here I should put WHO)

3. He's the tallest man .............I ever saw. ( here maybe WHOM)

4. She's the same ..........she's always been. ( here I don't know at all what to put)

I'd use 'who' for the first sentence and 'whom' for the second, but I wouldn't try to shoehorn a 'who' clause into the last two sentences.
Also, here's how I'd write those last two:

"He was the tallest man I had ever seen."
"She's the same (that) she's always been."

It can't be whom in the second. The relative pronoun is the subject of the verb 'had been'.

Believe it or not, there are some experts who feel that your sentence would be fine with the relative pronoun that.

Their explanation: when there is a superlative, "that" is fine:

She is the best teacher that I have ever had.

P.S. I am sure that some teachers would insist on a little change in your sentence:

He is the tallest man ____ I have ever seen (so far in my life).
