Thread: Provided/ Providing (that) ?

    Default Provided/ Providing (that) ?

    1. Provided that / Supposed that / Granted that
    2. Providing that / Supposing that / Granting that


    Are the both 1 and 2 used exchangeably?


    3. Do you say "Giving that ~' instead of 'Given that' ?


    4. Are "Permitted that' and 'Assumed that' used instead of 'Permitting that' and 'Assuming that'?


    I've been looking over grammar books and googling, finding all different explanations.


    I trust usingenglish teachers. Please brighten me up. (!)

    Because you are a teacher, I have to say that I am reluctant to help you answering your questions, but I guess it does not hurt.

    1. I have never heard of things such as "supposing that," and "granting that". For "providing that," I GUESS it can be used to start a sentence.

    2. I don't know if "giving that" actually exists. Is it possible that you may be confused with people saying "given that", but it sounds like they said "giving that?"

    I have no comment on your fourth question.

    We do use "given" that way here. "It's a given" = It can be assumed.

    Given that X = Now that we know or can assume that someting is true.

    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
