What does it mean by "Lady needs a place to hang her hat" except for the literal meaning?
I guess it means "A she needs a place to settle down to work or live." Is is correct?
The answers will be appreciated.
I see. Thank you.
But you don't mean 'What does it mean by...'' You mean 'What does it mean?', and in this context you'd have to say 'What does [the sentence] "Lady needs a place to hang her hat" mean?'
If you saw the sign "Lady needs a place to hang her hat" , you might ask (of someone who can also see the sign, or someone who you've told about the sign) 'What does it mean by "Lady"/ - does it mean 'woman', 'upper-class woman who regards herself as in some sense 'better' than other women', does it mean 'woman with the title Lady [like 'Lady Jane Grey', not 'Lady Gaga']?'
There is a phrase (and a song) called "Wherever I Lay My Hat, That's My Home".
