Default Row Row Row your boat....."Life is but a dream" ???

    Dear All,

The very popular kid song "Row Row Row Your Boat", I can understand the lyrics except "Life is but a dream", please explain it to me the meaning. Thanks!

    Row, row, row your boat,
    Gently down the stream.
    Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
    Life is but a dream.

    Hi,

"Life is but a dream" means that life is nothing more than a dream, life is just a dream.

We could, but people don't normally go around saying it.

Hardly — for many of us it's a nightmare.

The writer of the song needed a rhyme for 'stream'. He could have written 'Life is such a scream' and been equally unintelligible.

EDIT: Rats! Six minutes late again! This is getting annoying.
