    The cheese looks as if rats (nibble) it. Should it be 'nibbled' or 'had nibbled'?

    It could be nibble (regular habit), nibbled or have nibbled. To use "had nibbled" the sentence would need to begin "The cheese looked as if ..."
    Remember - correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing make posts much easier to read.
