    He saw us. He ran away.

    Which of the following is the correct sentence when the above sentences are synthesised?

    1. No sooner did he see us than he ran away.

    2. No sooner had he seen us than he ran away.

    You could say, "Hardly had he seen us when he ran away."

    Only the second sentence is correct.
