ex)Sadly, the friendship with Jerry ended after many years. He had a distinguished teaching career. I know most of his criticism of me was valid, and I learned a great deal from him. But one of the main reasons it ended was that the criticism was so constant. It was never balanced with any form of praise, and eventually it wore me down.

Yes, the second definition is quite accurate in my view. However, one can also get tired of being criticised, so I think that the first one also works.
