Hi,
IMO, it means that Big Bird tries to avoid entering the political game.

Don't mess with Big Bird. That was the message GOP candidate Mitt Romney got in Wednesday's first presidential debate, when he vowed to stop federal subsidies to PBS.

Please be aware that I'm neither a native English speaker nor (at present) a teacher.
(I always thought Big Bird was flightless...)

Wasn't he the only one who could see Mr. Snuffleumpagus, the elephant? I never thought about him flying. He may have been able to, between camera apparances. Good question.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Yes, he was the only one around when Snuffleumpagus was around and no one else believed he existed.
There's no way a bird that big can fly.
