Of COURSE there should be a goal in writing. What is the point, otherwise? Inform, persuade, amuse/entertain, argue, educate, etc. You should never start the process of writing without knowing what you hope to accomplish by putting your time into creating those words!
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
