    Default Piano on a wire

He had this air of finality hanging over him like a piano on a wire.

What does the captioned phrase mean?

    Thanks!

Imagine what that would feel like- you'd be worried about it falling.

    Damocles had similar anxiety.

(For a few years before my company finally managed to get rid of me, I tried to popularize the word 'sub-Damoclean'; it didn't catch on though.)
