Default the very worst film of the year.

Can "very" describe a superlative adjective? To emphasize it?

It might be illogical, but I would say that.

    Dictionary example sentences:

    Those were her very words.
He might be phoning her at this very moment.
That's the very thing I need.

Can I say VERY is used to modify FILM only, regardless of WORST?

    Not in the OP's sentence.

In the above examples, very is used with its adjectival meaning — 'actual'.

In the OP's question, it's an adverb.

I don't think I have seen "very" describing superlatives, maybe the maker of the workbook made a mistake. "ever" is used to emphsize superlatives, isn't it?
