go too far/go over the top

Does it sound ok: "I think I went too far with that wine" or "I think I went over the top with that wine". If not, what other variant are possible?

What did he actually do with the wine?

As you know, how English is used will vary based on where you live.
I would not guess that "you went over the top with the wine" meant that you got drunk.

My first through would be something like you had already given someone many gifts, and the wine was just too much. Or maybe you had spent more than you should on a dinner out, and then bought a very expensive bottle of wine.
