big eyes and squint

A teacher taught a child to read the following poem.

There are big waves and little waves,
Green waves and blue,

The teacher marked a note of "big eyes" over "big" and "squint" over "little".

Does "big eyes" mean open your eyes bigger? Does "squint" mean "to have each eye looking in a slightly different direction"?

Am I to understand that the teacher is changing "waves" to "eyes"?

I imagine that the teacher was giving instructions on what the child was to do while reading the poem aloud - open his/her eyes wide (big eyes) when saying 'big', and close his/her eyes slightly (squint) when saying 'little'.
