Do volunteers work for thrift shops to donate money to charities? I've heard of "soup kitchen" volunteers in Korea, but never of "thrift shops".

In the UK many charities operate shops where they sell (mainly) donated goods for the benefit of the charity. These are called "charity shops" and are staffed largely by volunteers.

"Thrift shops" is a common term/facility in the U.S. usually selling used, but usable, clothing and/or household goods, but not food.

It's the same here in the US, except they are called "thrift" stores or shops.

People donate used (but still in good condition) items which are sold, so there's a double benefit of being able to buy clothes or other items very inexpensively and the revenue collected also goes to support the poor in some way.

In Aust/NZ the usual term for a charity operated second-hand store is op(p)-shop (opportunity shop).
