    Default Spread outward

I'm not sure about one word combination which is in bold. "A huge lizard rises before him. Spiky plates on its head spread outward as a warning for the enemy". Is it correct to say like that? May be I can use "spread" without "outward"?

I think "spread outward" is fine, "spread" by itself would not be as effective.
